THE CHARACTER

Character Name: Hana 'D.Va' Song
Series: Overwatch
Canon Point: After the Recall animated short
Character Age: 19
Background: official bio, story on wiki, canon timeline for reference

Personality:
Hana is, first and foremost, confident. Her first name means even means ‘one.’ She will, without fail, continually remind any and all who will listen that she is, in fact, #1. And quite loudly so; confident of her skills, confident in herself, and confident in her place in the world even in spite of her young age, unafraid to stand up for herself when someone doubts her. And boy, is she sassy. To that point, when she is frustrated by someone who will belittle or undermine her success by using her age and lack of experience (because in her mind, her skills alone are enough to overcome those) she simply responds by either being dismissive or with a similar bite to her words. She's quite demanding with the respect that she believes she deserves, but she is also just cocky and cheeky, as evidenced by her in-game voice lines conveying her eagerness to show off her skills, her confidence in them, and her sass against enemies. (especially when canceling out their ultimates!)

She is also determined— Hana didn’t become a world-class, top-ranked professional gamer at age sixteen without a fiercely competitive spirit and the drive to become the best at what she does. That same determination, however, can also turn sideways into ruthlessness. In her days a pro gamer, D.Va was quite known for being a merciless opponent to her enemies. In combat, her confidence and determination show in how she handles herself and how she behaves around teammates, carrying herself like someone who is driven to do their best and, most importantly, win. Hana’s determination and work ethic were what gave her the top rank as a pro gamer, and it naturally made her a top pick for the Korean military’s MEKA pilot program— and Hana readily rose to that occasion, eager to prove her skill in real life combat after having proven herself virtually. She is, however, a very sore loser, and her frustration and agitation tends to be readily apparent whenever things do not go her way, almost coming across in a bratty way - her young age certainly shows in this situations.

On a similar note, too, she is courageous. In spite of having been drafted by the military, Hana treats her new role as a new challenge to take on without apparent hesitation, and she grows into that role with an uncanny finesse. She is described as a global icon in addition to her status of having been a world champion in gaming and being a military hero in her country - due in large part to her fierce attitude, charisma, and upbeat attitude. As she streams her combat operations from her mech, she maintains a chipper note to her manner with her fans and viewers in mind. Upon meeting apparent fans, too, she is quite friendly and happily does things like sign autographs, and when experiencing successes even in combat she will dedicate it to her fans. She has a massive following that includes even other celebrities like Lucio and several sponsorship and marketing gigs that all speak to her ability to connect with and sway people.

When so much of her life has revolved around gaming, and the sense of escapism that comes with gaming, Hana has a tendency to be rather flippant about things that seem like they should be heavier. For example, she treats her assignment to MEKA and her missions in fighting in the Second Omnic Crisis like a game, even streaming her operations from her mech like someone would stream themselves playing a video game. And when reminded that things like war aren’t games, she would respond with, “are you sure life isn’t a game?”

All of this, however, describes the bulk of D.Va - the nineteen year old girl behind the fearless, strong icon that people know is Hana Song, and there are some things about Hana that people who only know D.Va might not necessarily know. One such thing is that, in spite of D.Va’s confidence and bravery, Hana herself does have some weaknesses. ’I’m too young to die,’ she says in gameplay, suggesting that much of her desire to succeed at her mission is also driven by a determination to survive, the fear of dying young. She can also be somber, at times, as illustrated by her reaction to seeing the remnants of a war-torn Eichenwalde in-game in which she remarks that the destruction ‘reminds her of home.’

Where D.Va’s optimism is peppy and bubbly, too, Hana’s own hopefulness is more sincere and heartfelt and driven by compassion and altruism. An interaction she has with Reinhardt in-game upon her reaction to seeing the very technologically-advanced city of Oasis suggests that she’s invested in the well-being of her country even beyond the war that she’s fighting. After the war is won (and D.Va would, of course, argue that they will definitely win) comes rebuilding, and Hana would like to see her country rebuilt into something great again.

Then there are the things that D.Va and Hana definitely have in common. There is a reason, after all, that Hana chose ‘D.Va’ as her gaming handle and it’s because she is, in fact, a diva. With her seemingly unshakable confidence comes an attitude that everything is about her or revolves around her and it colors the way she interacts with people. She is also vain, with a definite penchant for taking selfies.

Powers/Abilities:
  • reflexes & aim— as the country’s top professional gamer and consequently its top pilot, Hana’s reflexes, hand-eye coordination and aim are extraordinary, and presumably comparable to the reaction times and such of the automated drones that she was effectively replacing. In her pro days this also afforded her a high “APM” (actions per minute) which meant she could be acting and reacting to several things simultaneously or in quick succession, and this has lent itself quite well to her piloting abilities.

  • mech unit piloting— in her MEKA unit, Hana is agile and powerful. Her unit is small and incredibly mobile, equipped with boosters that thrust her forward or into the air for a brief period and a default movement speed that isn’t too cumbersome for an armored mech unit. She is quite aggressive in her piloting style (or play style, as it were), being able to get into close quarters with enemies and then being able to dart away at her convenience. Her unit is equipped with mid- to short-range fusion cannons which essentially have unlimited ammo, but slow her mech down while firing. It also has a Defense Matrix function, which is a projected targeting array that allows Hana to neutralize incoming projectiles at her behest. Finally, the mech is equipped with a self-destruct sequence.

Power Nerfs (if applicable):
In Overwatch gameplay, Hana is able to summon new mech units at her will whenever one is destroyed or self-destructed; however, I consider this to be a mechanic that exists purely for gameplay and as such, if she were to gain her mech here in-game, she would not be able to summon infinite mechs from the sky whenever she wants. However, she would still have the ability to ‘Call Mech’ which would call her (one and only) mech unit to her location much like Tony Stark would call his suit.

Inventory:
  • Her flight suit (headset included)
  • If possible, her pistol which is a very simple blaster-type gun!

Incentives:
Hana’s biggest incentive would likely be the safety of her loved ones; in this specific case, her parents, and other fellow gamers-turned-pilot/soldiers that she would have been on a team or squadron with in the military. Another incentive would be obtaining her MEKA unit, unless she would already start off with having access to it (I figured that it would be something I would have to get through activity bonus, so no worries!) because it’s something that she places a lot of her identity in.
